ABOUT THE PROJECT

WHAT IS THIS THING?

This project was the amalgamation of my passions for recording and composing. I combined my investments in the ever-dilating sample library industry with my proficiency in the recording studio to construct an intimate, playable catalogue of percussion.

The central cause, or thesis, of this project was honesty. From the beginning, I hoped to build this library on the integrity of the instruments themselves and the rooms they were played in. It was up to me to capture these sounds without sacrificing the character they offered.

To translate them with total lucidity meant to keep things humble and organic. Despite every urge to "Hollywood-ize" these samples, I did no compressing, no violent eq scooping, no harmonic excitation...and I was left with pristine recordings of a human interacting with an instrument in a room. Nothing more.

HOW DID IT COME TO BE?

I recorded a lot of audio.

Over 30GB of audio. Sample Libraries are put together by recording, organizing, and extracting individual audio files for specific articulations for a variety of instruments (in this case drums).

The sample library includes four categories: World, OrchestralFX, and My Kitchen. The instruments in these categories vary from having 2-3 articulations, to having 7-10. Each articulation was captured with at least 6 velocity layers and 4 round robins (unless the articulation was specialized in some way). All of these articulations and performances were captured at 96kHz/24bit via combinations of Neumann KM 184's, Neumann U87's, and AKG C414's as our mainstay microphones.

Myself and percussionists Matt Heim, Mary Manos, and Drew Martin rounded up collections of instruments for each category and systematically recorded thousands of individual hits and articulations. After these sometimes-excruciating sessions, it was my job to select the best audio and delegate it to customized Kontakt scripts and interface structures. As a result of these countless hours, each instrument is deeply human and playable.
